Г.  In 1935, on the initiative of the prominent scientist and engineer of academician Yevhen Oskarovich Paton, a department of welding production was established at the mechanical faculty of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute and the training of mechanical engineers was organized in the specialty "Equipment and technology of welding production". The need for training specialists in this profile was caused by the need for intensive development of domestic industry, transport, construction and many other sectors of the national economy. By transferring students from other specialties welding groups were formed at the 2nd and 3rd training courses, and the first graduation of the engineers of the welding specialty (17 persons) was held already in 1938, and before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, 104 specialist welders were trained .

The active participation in the educational process at the department in those years was attended by many scientific staff organized in 1934 by the Institute of Electric Welding of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In particular, V. I. Dyatlova, V. V. Shevernitsky, A. Sidorenko, F. E. Sorokovskii should be called. The professors I.P.Trochun and N.V. Pines, assistant G.K. Blavdezevich and the chief metallurgist of the aviation plant M.M. Bort were invited to teach the main disciplines. The department was allocated the necessary number of premises in which the educational process was carried out and research was carried out. Gradually the department acquired the welding equipment, instruments, materials necessary for the educational process and scientific work. The activities of the department entered the normal course.

Since the beginning of the department, its leader was E.O. Paton. However, his heavy work as a director of the Institute of Electric Welding complicated his work at the KPI, and in 1938 he was forced to leave the KPI, but he continued to provide the department with comprehensive assistance, invariably embodying the idea laid down initially on the relationship and cooperation of both of their children.

Eugene Oskarovich was an outstanding scientist and teacher, which had a very beneficial effect on the quality of the training of welder specialists. In those years, E.O. Paton, the basis of the training of welding engineers were laid on important methodological principles, consisting in the need to combine theoretical and practical training of students, in the subordination of the content of training specialists to the practical tasks of the development of welding production, in high demands on the work of students over educational material, widely used to teach modern achievements in welding science and technology. These principles the scientific-pedagogical staff of the department carefully preserves and at present.

In 1938 E.O. Paton as the head of the department changed the associate professor. V. L. Ulasik. Launched in 1941, the war interrupted the training of welding specialists. The Kiev Polytechnic Institute was evacuated to the city of Tashkent. Many teachers, staff members, graduate students and students were mobilized into the Red Army, part of them went to factories that produced defense products. Due to the lack of teaching staff, the training of engineers for welding in Tashkent was not conducted.

After the return of the KPI from Kyiv to evacuate in 1944, the Welding Department immediately restored its activity. From July till November 1944 the head of the department was Prof. G. I. Pogodin-Alekseev, and then from the end of 1944 to 1947 - associate professor. I.P. Trochun and a short period in 1947, associate professor. M. M. Gapchenko and assistant. M. M. Bort. Many forces and energy were given by the staff and students of the department to restore the buildings and laboratories destroyed during the war, equipping the department with the necessary welding equipment. In fact, a new teaching and laboratory base of the department was created with a total area of about 700 square meters. meters. A major contribution to the solution of this task was made by academician K. K. Khrenov, who headed the department from 1947 to 1957. The first post-war production of mechanical engineers in the field of "Equipment and technology of welding production" took place in 1947. Since 1965, the department has been opened training of electromechanical engineers in the specialty "Electrothermal installations" with specialization in the field of electric welding plants. After K. K. Khrenov, the department was headed by prof. I.P.Trochun (1957-1967) and prof. VI I. Dyatlov (1967-1969).

From the very beginning, the Department has received extensive research and development work. Postgraduate courses are organized and successfully functioning. Postgraduates and many staff members of the department defend candidate dissertations. Teachers of the Department publish a series of books that have gained wide popularity. On the department there are stable scientific directions. The collective of the department under the general leadership of academician K. K. Khrenov performed at that time a number of works related to the study of the welding arc (V. E. Moravsky, G. B. Serdyuk, G. V. Vasiliev, L. A. Byalotsky) , with the development of ceramic flux systems and their manufacturing technology (DM Kushnaryov, I. M. Zhdanov, M. P. Grebelnik, etc.), with the development of ceramic fluxes for surfacing and surfacing technology (M.O.Gorpenyuk, Yu .

Khrenov published the fundamental monograph "Electric welding arc", which became the first major work on this issue. The results of studies devoted to the development and application of ceramic fluxes are set out in the monograph by K. K. Khrenov and D. M. Kushnaryov "Ceramic Fluxes", published in 1954. Important works on theoretical welding problems were performed under the direction of VI Dyatlova, who In 1963 he defended his doctoral dissertation. These include the original developments in the field of the theory of freely expandable and compressed arc welding, the calculation of modes of automatic welding under flux, the transfer of electrode metal and a number of other issues. Under the direction of M. M. Gapchenko, a number of works were carried out at the department, aimed at studying welding, fracture of metals and improving the technology of welding steels and alloys. The results of the research are summarized in the monograph of M. M. Gapchenko "The fragile destruction of welded joints and structures", as well as in his doctoral dissertation, protected in 1969.

A great development in the 50-60's was the work in the field of gas-flame treatment of metals, conducted under the leadership of M. M. Borta and A. D. Kotvitsky. Particularly noteworthy is the oxygen cutting at low pressure of oxygen of a metal of a large thickness, the package cutting of metal, the development of a series of installations for cutting round profile, steel molding, hot rolled, etc. There were created fundamentally new types of cutters.

Works in the field of welding stresses and deformations developed under the guidance of I. M. Zhdanov and I. P. Trochun, who developed simple and visual methods of engineering calculations of welding stresses and deformations in metal structures. The main results of these studies are set out in the monograph of I.P.Trochun "Internal forces and deformations during welding". Widely developed in the 1960's under the direction of I. M. Zhdanov a study of thermo-deformation processes during welding (works by I. Zh. Zhdanov, I. M. Chertov, E. A. Korshenko, V. M. Prokhorenko, A. S. Karpenko, V. M. Korzh, B. V. Medka, A. K. Gonchar, etc.). The main directions of research - the study of patterns of formation of deformations and stresses in the process of welding, the laws of fragile destruction, the creation of new experimental methods of research and devices, the development of methods for reducing residual stresses and deformations.

In parallel, studies related to the creation of theory and the study of the kinetics of doping a weld pool through flux, as well as the study of the thermography of physico-chemical processes occurring during heating, melting and hardening of welding fluxes (MI Kopersak, A. M. Slyvinsky)

From 1962 to 1978, under the direction of V.P. Chernysh, the work on creation of methods for magnetic control of the crystallization of welds was carried out (VP Chernysh, V.V. Serovatka, I.V. Malinkin, V.D. Kuznetsov and etc.). The obtained results confirmed the possibility of active influence on the process of primary crystallization by electromagnetic mixing of the weld bath and showed that mixing leads to the shredding of the metal structure of the seam, changes in depth and shape of the droplet.

In 1969, the head of the department of the Institute of electric welding Dr. Tekhn. Was invited to the position of the head of the department (part-time). professor B. S. Kasatkin, who led the department until June 1972. This contributed to the significant expansion and strengthening of the comprehensive creative cooperation between the department and the IEZ them. E.O. Paton, especially in the field of scientific research. Significantly revive the contracting scientific research work, training of scientific staff through postgraduate studies and an independent way. At the same time, more and more noticeable difficulties were felt in connection with the limited academic, laboratory and scientific base of the department.

In the early 70's, the Ukrainian government decided to create, on the basis of the KPI and the Institute of Electric Welding, the Training Center for joint training and advanced training of engineers-welders. A new training laboratory was built (currently the 23rd building of NTUU "KPI") with an area of 6,000 square meters. In September 1977, the department moved to new educational facilities, equipped with modern equipment and devices. On the basis of the Training Center of Welding, a workshop on UNIDO.

The functioning of the Training Center for welding significantly increased the level of academic and scientific work at the department. Leading scientists of the Institute of Electric Welding such as GI I. Leskov, A. I. Chvetko, A. G. Potapievsky, V. R. Ryabov, V. M. Zamkov, V. Ye Moravsky were invited for teaching work at the department on the terms of the joint work. , VI I. Makhnenko, B. A. Movchan, A. A. Rossoshynsky and others.

From 1972 to 1974, the head of the department was Dr. Tekhn. professor M. M. Gapchenko, and since 1974 it was headed by Dr. Tech. professor I.P.Patskevich. In 1978, from the department of welding production, a department of welding equipment was selected under the direction of Dr. Tekhn. professor V.P. Chernysh

On the basis of the Welding Department of the KPI, in 1975, the welding department, which until 2002 was led by a graduate of the weld manufacturing department in 1960, resumed the professor's work. Anatoly Matviyovych Slyvinsky. Currently the welding faculty is managed by Dr. Tech. Sciences, prof. S.K. Fomichev. Nowadays the faculty consists of three special departments: welding production, electric welding plants, engineering of the surface. The faculty trains bachelors in the direction "Welding", as well as engineers in the specialties "Technology and equipment welding", "Welding plants", "Technology and equipment for the restoration and improvement of wear resistance of machines and structures" and masters in the field of welding science and engineering on the basis of baccalaureate training . At present, about 400 students study at the faculty. Apart from the training of students, faculty scientists perform a wide range of scientific research on the most relevant modern scientific areas.

In the 80's new scientific directions arose at the department of welding production. Under the direction of I.R.Patskevich, the development of issues concerning the technology of welding iron and the study of surface phenomena during welding. The wettability and diffusion of various pairs of liquid metals in isothermal and non-isothermal conditions was studied. The influence of external actions on these phenomena is determined. The results of these works are presented in the monograph of I. R. Pazskevich, V. R. Ryabov and G. F. Deyev "Surface phenomena in metals during welding" (1991). A.M. Svilinsky led the development of the problems of creating new welding materials. New methods for calculating welding stresses, taking into account the influence of the latter on the fragile destruction of welded joints, were reflected in the work of V. M. Prokhorenko, who, according to the materials of these studies, defended his doctoral dissertation in 1989. Some of these scientific results were included in the textbook B. C. Kasatkina, V. M. Prokhorenko, I. M. Chertov "Tensions and deformations during welding", published in 1987 Methods for improving the accuracy of welded structures were intensively investigated under the guidance of I. Zhdanov. Many interesting results were obtained by VV Batyuk with the staff on the development of devices and technology of non-destructive testing of residual welding stresses in various welded structures. The development of plasma processes of welding, surfacing and cutting materials was headed by M. M. Gapchenko. Significant results were obtained under the guidance of VN Korzh in the field of development of equipment and technology for welding using hydrogen-oxygen flame. Materials of these researches formed the basis for the doctoral dissertation V. N. Korzh, protected in 1991. Studies in the field of the temperature regime of a weld bath and droplets of electrode metal are performed by VM Dukhno and SM Hetmanets. Since the end of 80th and to date, a large complex of works on improving the corrosion resistance of welded structures has been carried out at the department under the guidance of S.K. Fomichov. The materials of these studies formed the basis of his doctoral dissertation, which he defended in 1994. Since 1987, the department under the direction of I.P. Bilokur intensively developed questions on defectoscopy and quality control of welded joints. The results of research in this area are reflected in the doctoral dissertation, defended by I.P. Bilokur in 1991, as well as in numerous publications.

From May 1989 to March 26, 2015, the head of the department of welding production worked as a Doctor. tech Sciences, prof. VM Prokhorenko (graduate of the department in 1962).

In 1991 from the department of welding production a department of restoration of machine parts was allocated, which at that time was headed by the candidate. tech Associate Professor VM Dukhno, since October 1993 - Doc. tech Sciences, professor, VN Korzh, since 2001 it is headed by a Doctor. tech Sciences, prof. VD Kuznetsov She was tasked with training specialists in the field of "Technology and equipment for the restoration and improvement of wear resistance of machines and structures".

Many of the graduates of the department became prominent figures of the science in the field of welding production. Among graduates of the department more than 350 candidates and 45 doctors of technical sciences, including academician b and corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In the framework of this article it is difficult to name the names of all prominent graduates of the department. We will mention only a few names, among which academicians B. I. Medovar, I. K. Pogodnya, S. I. Kuchuk-Yatsenko, correspondent members A. M. Makar.
